UW-Madison alum and VP of College Democrats of America said he became involved in the movement to elect Barack Obama because he wanted to represent young people.
Awais Khaleel said he was lucky to start college in 2003 because the primaries for the 2004 election were just beginning.
"I first got involved in politics by volunteering for College Democrats. I was fortunate because at that time there was a lot going on," he said.
Many of the young WI delegates said they feel a sense of pride by serving the WI delegation and representing the youth of America. Khaleel said he wants everyone to know he is a Badger.
"I feel a sense of pride of being a delegate from WI and from UW-Madison, make sure everyone knows that is where I am from," he said. "I am proud that we have been known in the past as a purple state and know are known as a blue state. Whatever stereotypes people had about WI, I hope when they see our delegation, it all goes away."
Awais said despite the media attention he received for gaining a position as a WI superdelegate, he never once though the movement was about him.
"I have a huge responsibility but at the same time I know this is never about me...it is really everyone else's wishes that we as delegates want to fufill," he said. "I hope I am the least cool person you have met so far."
